Peter Duthie, former Chief Executive, Scottish Event Campus
Peter Duthie was Chief Executive of Scottish Event Campus Limited (SEC) from April 2014 until June 2024 with full responsibility for the entire business operation of the SEC.
The award-winning SEC is a national asset and one of Europe’s most successful event venues, incorporating the SEC Centre, the SEC Armadillo and the OVO Hydro.
Through hosting conferences, exhibitions and live entertainment, success is measured not only in financial terms, but in the significant economic impact generated by the campus (nearly £½ billion for Glasgow annually). The OVO Hydro is established as one of the busiest live entertainment venues in the world with over 1 million visitors per year.
Alongside major international conferences, the SEC has hosted events such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games and MTV European Music Awards, the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships, and the Glasgow 2018 European Championships (Gymnastics) which have put Glasgow and Scotland firmly on the world stage.
Having been with the Company since its inception as the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre (SECC) in 1984, Peter played an integral part in all aspects of its evolution with contributions to all sectors of the business. The SECC opened in 1985, the Armadillo was added in 1997 and the OVO Hydro in 2013. From a sports background, he was initially responsible for the development of sporting events and concerts at the venue. He was a member of the senior management team from 1991, rising to the position of Commercial Director and Company Secretary in 2008, with responsibility for all commercial activity on the campus including sponsorship, strategic partnerships and joint ventures.
As CEO, Peter led the company, rebranding the business as the Scottish Event Campus and developing the dynamic vision for the SEC ‘to be the best event campus in Europe’, following the mission statement ‘Best Venues, Best People, Best Events’. Focused on the people in the business who deliver the success, the strategy incorporates an ambitious expansion plan for the SEC to become a world leading, sustainable campus.
Most notably, securing COP26 for Glasgow has been a huge success for the city and for Scotland, and will present significant legacy opportunities.
Peter is Chair of the Event Industry Advisory Group (EIAG) which provides representation for the events sector to the Scottish Government. A regular speaker at industry events, he has represented the event sector on various council, stakeholder and government bodies.
He chaired SEC’s wholly owned event management company, QD Events Limited, was chair of the Glasgow Tourism Partnership and is a Director of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.
Peter was also a Director of Net Zero Carbon Events, an initiative to connect the events industry globally in addressing climate change, of which the SEC is a founding partner, and which was launched at COP26 supported by UNFCCC.
In 2023, Peter was awarded an Honorary Degree by the University of Strathclyde in recognition of his contribution to culture, business, and society.
He was also presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Glasgow Business Awards.
He is a Director of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.
Peter has maintained his interest in sport, having played cricket for Scotland (acquiring 53 caps between 1984 and 1994), and played rugby, basketball and hockey all at senior club level. He won the Scottish Colleges Golf Championship in 1981, and currently plays off a handicap of 4.
He is married to Liz, with two daughters, Gaynor (36) and Ria (34) and grandson Rémy (4).
